THE BLOOD OATH

MADE IN PAIN. KEPT IN SILENCE.

Some promises are easy to make when everything is going good. The real test comes when things go bad.

That is where I see the Blood Oath.

For centuries, people have used oaths to bind themselves to another person, a family, a cause, a duty or simply their word. Some were spoken publicly. Others were made privately. History is full of ceremonies involving blood, but the symbol here does not need somebody cutting their hand. The blood represents something deeper. Something personal enough that breaking your word feels like cutting into yourself.

There are people who will stand beside you when everybody is watching. That is easy. The harder question is who remains when nobody is watching and there is nothing to gain.

That is why the sword belongs in this symbol. A sword can protect, but it can also wound. Trust works much the same way. Give it to the right person and it can become protection. Give it to the wrong person and you may discover exactly how sharp betrayal can be.

I also think there are promises we make to ourselves that nobody else ever hears. Maybe you decide you will never become the person who hurt you. Maybe you promise you will finish something you started. Maybe you simply decide that whatever happens next, you are going to keep your word.

Nobody applauds those promises.

Nobody even knows they exist.

But you do.

That may be the strongest Blood Oath of all because there is nobody standing over you making sure you keep it.

Only you know whether your word still means what it did the day you gave it.
