You begin life believing that people are generally good. Most of us do. We want to believe that a handshake means something. That someone’s word still has value. That loyalty is something people carry with pride instead of convenience.

Then life starts teaching different lessons.

You meet people who say exactly what you need to hear because they want something from you. You meet people who celebrate your success until it becomes bigger than theirs. You meet people who promise they’ll stand beside you, only to disappear when life gets difficult. Sometimes they don’t walk away quietly. Sometimes they become the very people trying to tear down everything you built.

We make excuses for behaviour we would never accept from anyone else.

Sometimes we betray our own values just to keep the peace.

That kind of betrayal is easy to overlook because there is no one else to blame.

The mirror becomes uncomfortable.

That is why the final verses are so important. They shift the focus away from pointing fingers and toward personal responsibility. We cannot always control what other people do. We can control how we respond, what we learn, and who we choose to become afterward.

WHY THIS SONG FITS MOITA

If someone asked me to describe MOITA in one sentence, I would probably say this.

It is music about real life.

Not the version people tell their neighbours.

The real version.

The one that includes failure, regret, hope, love, loss, mistakes, forgiveness, and everything in between.

That is exactly where Trust No One belongs.

Throughout the MOITA catalogue, there is a common thread. Every song asks a question about life. Sometimes the question is directed at society. Sometimes it is directed at another person. Sometimes it is directed straight back at me.

This song does all three.

It asks why loyalty has become so difficult to find.

It asks why people can smile while planning to hurt someone.

Then, just when it would be easy to leave the listener pointing fingers at everyone else, it turns around and asks the hardest question of all.

That is one of the reasons I wanted to build MOITA the way I did. I never wanted hundreds of songs that all sounded the same or repeated the same message. I wanted each song to explore another part of being human.

Some songs celebrate life.

Some challenge people to think.

Some ask uncomfortable questions.

Some simply tell stories.

Trust No One sits in the middle of all those ideas.

It is honest enough to admit that people can hurt us.

It is honest enough to admit that we can hurt ourselves.

And it is honest enough to admit that healing begins when we stop pretending those things never happened.

There is another reason this song feels important to me.

Trust is one of the foundations that every relationship is built on. Families need it. Friendships need it. Marriages need it. Businesses need it. Communities need it. Entire countries depend on it.

Once trust disappears, everything becomes harder.

Communication breaks down.

Fear grows.

People become suspicious.

Division spreads.

You can see it happening everywhere around us.

That is why this song is bigger than one person’s experience.

Every song has lines that carry the weight of the entire message. Sometimes they are obvious. Sometimes they are hidden in plain sight. Trust No One has several of those moments. They were not written just because they sounded good. Every one of them came from watching people, watching myself, and watching how life has a way of exposing character over time.

One of the first lines in the song sets the direction immediately.

“Some scars don’t come from strangers
They come from the hands you shook.”

That is something many people eventually discover.

We spend a lot of time teaching children about stranger danger, and that is important. But as adults, many of the deepest wounds come from people we already know. Friends. Family members. Partners. Business associates. The people we invited into our lives.

The pain is different because trust already existed.

A stranger cannot betray trust that was never given.

That is why betrayal cuts so deeply. It is not only the action that hurts. It is the loss of confidence in someone you believed was on your side.

One of my favourite parts of the song comes just before the chorus.

Those words are not aimed at one person.

They are aimed at all of us.

It is natural to look for someone else to blame when life falls apart.

Sometimes another person really is responsible.

But growth begins when we are willing to ask ourselves uncomfortable questions.

What warning signs did I ignore?

What could I have done differently?

What will I learn from this?

Those questions are not about accepting someone else’s wrongdoing.

They are about making sure we do not repeat the same mistakes.

That is how wisdom is built.

The chorus repeats the words Trust No One again and again.

Some people may hear those words as an invitation to become isolated.

That is not what I meant.

I hear them as a reminder to slow down before giving someone complete access to your life.

Trust should not be handed out because someone asks for it.

I think this may be the most important line in the entire song.

That is why Trust No One ends where it does.

Not with hopelessness.

Be wiser tomorrow than you were yesterday.

WHY THIS MATTERS

There is a saying that trust takes years to build and only seconds to lose. I think most people would agree with that because almost everyone has lived through it.

The older I get, the more I realize this song is not really about betrayal. It is about what comes after betrayal.

That is the part people do not talk about enough.

What happens after your confidence is shaken?

What happens after someone lies to you?

What happens after the person you defended becomes the person who hurts you?

Those moments leave us standing at a crossroads.

One road leads toward bitterness.

The other leads toward wisdom.

Bitterness is easy because it asks nothing from us except to stay angry. It tells us that everyone is the same, nobody can be trusted, and the safest way to live is to keep everyone at a distance.

There is a big difference.
