People like to think the scales are about justice. I look at them a little differently.
Life doesn’t always hand out justice, and anyone who has lived long enough has probably watched the wrong person win and the right person pay the price.
That is where these scales become interesting.
Look at the two sides. One decision adds weight.
One lie adds another. A good deed can move them too.
We spend years putting things onto those plates without always realizing we are doing it.
Words, promises, betrayals, loyalty, greed, kindness, silence. Some weigh more than we expected.
The courthouse in the background asks another question.
Is something right because a system says it is right?
Laws have changed throughout history.
Things once considered legal became unacceptable, while people once condemned were later understood very differently.
Justice and law can walk together, but they are not always the same thing.
The eye beside the scales watches the whole story, not simply the part somebody wants seen.
The hourglass reminds us that consequences sometimes arrive late.
The broken heart carries the weight nobody else can measure.
And that returning circle is probably the one I think about most.
What we put into other people’s lives has a strange habit of travelling.
Maybe it comes back. Maybe it doesn’t.
The scales don’t promise fairness.
They ask something harder.
When nobody is measuring you, what are you putting on them?
